Resilia Hosts Grantmakers for Effective Organizations’ Peer Event “Advancing Racial Equity Through Trust-Based Capacity Building”
What's the one piece of advice you'd have for funders in the room who are trying to strengthen BIPOC-led/serving organizations?
That was one of the many insightful questions asked by Anthony Simmons, Resilia's Senior Director of Institutional Partnerships, Equity, during the Grantmakers for Effective Organizations' (GEO) Peer Event: "Advancing Racial Equity Through Trust-Based Capacity Building," at GEO's 2022 National Conference hosted in Chicago, Illinois.
GEO is a community of funders committed to transforming philanthropic culture and practice by connecting members to the resources and relationships needed to support thriving nonprofits and communities.
Anthony detailed how grantmakers are putting these recommendations into practice with Resilia. A Black woman-led social impact organization that provides customized support to nonprofits' mission-facing and back-office needs by meeting them where they are – all in the pursuit of strengthening historically marginalized communities.
With BIPOC-led nonprofits winning less grant money with more strings attached, receiving an average of 24% lower revenues, and having access to 76% less unrestricted net assets, there was much to discuss.
"Funders need to understand the unique challenges of small grassroots organizations and translate that understanding into real support and investment," said Lutonya Russell-Humes, Senior Director, Fund for Women & Girls at Fairfield County's Community Foundation.
"We are invested in our growth and understanding so that we can be better partners to organizations leading equity/anti-racist work," Russell-Humes said.
After the presentation, attendees reimagined a new capacity-building dynamic in their communities.
