Nonprofits at Work to Combat the Growing Food Insecurity Crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the world in many ways, including contributing to the growing food insecurity crisis in the United States. As stated in a letter sent by 14 military veteran members of Congress to the United States Department of Agriculture, “the number of food-insecure children is growing at an alarming rate.”

Many underprivileged children rely on school meals as their only source of nourishment throughout the week. COVID-19 has caused job loss and uncertainty around the start of the school year, leading to an increased number of children at high risk of food insecurity.

At Resilia, we’re putting the spotlight on three organizations and their responses to these challenges.

Feeding America

Feeding America, a nonprofit dedicated to hunger relief, has been an active voice, raising awareness about the impact of COVID-19 on food scarcity in America. The organization has shed light on these challenges through its Map the Meal Gap study. According to a modeled scenario in the study, 1 in 4 children are predicted to be food insecure in 2020. This information and Feeding America’s nationwide network of food banks are important resources for many.

Second Harvest Food Bank

As highlighted by Feeding America’s study, food banks are key to helping fight hunger and food scarcity. Second Harvest Food Bank, located in New Orleans, Louisiana, helps to provide food and support to more than 700 community partners and programs across 23 parishes. To help reach the growing number of Louisiana families facing the need for emergency food assistance, Second Harvest facilitates food distribution, provides mobile and school pantries and works to reduce childhood hunger through its Backpack Program, supplying at-risk children with backpacks full of healthy foods.

Goodr

Goodr is another example of a nonprofit working diligently to provide meals to families in need. The organization is leading the fight to end hunger and food insecurity through data-driven decisions, and during this trialing time, Goodr is facilitating donations and delivering groceries to families in need. The nonprofit is also collaborating with other organizations to help provide food for seniors and veterans.

At Resilia, our team is dedicated to helping nonprofits from formation to streamlining day-to-day management of grants and projects. We are committed to sharing resources to provide insight and guidance on relevant topics in the nonprofit sector.
